A Plant-Based Thanksgiving Guide: Easy Recipes, Family Conversations, and Why It Matters

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. There’s something comforting about the familiar meals, the slower pace, and the chance to gather with people we care about. But for many of us, the holiday can also bring up complicated feelings, especially when our values around food don’t quite match what’s traditionally on the table.
That’s one of the reasons I created the Menus for Change Plant-Based Thanksgiving Guide. I wanted to make something simple and helpful to show that a compassionate holiday is not only possible, but delicious, practical, and meaningful.

Why a Plant-Based Thanksgiving Matters
There are so many reasons people choose a plant-based holiday, and none of them need to be complicated. Here are a few that guide me:
Celebration without harm
Animals like turkeys, pigs, cows, and chickens are curious, social beings who form bonds, feel comfort, and seek safety just like we do. Choosing plant-based dishes lets us celebrate without asking any animal to lose their life for a meal.
Care that reaches the Earth
Plant-based dishes naturally use fewer resources and create less environmental harm. It’s a small shift that supports cleaner water, healthier soil, and a more stable climate.
Nourishment that loves you back
Vegan holiday dishes can be super tasty and satisfying without leaving you feeling heavy afterward. Many of the foods we’re already eating (potatoes, veggies, bread, cranberries, stuffing) are already plant-based or are close to being plant-based; they just need small swaps.
A table where everyone belongs
Plant-based dishes naturally make room for people with allergies, health concerns, or different religious and cultural practices. It’s a way to show care through the food we share.
Making the Meal Easier Than Ever
One thing I hear often is, “That sounds great, but isn’t vegan cooking a lot of work?” Honestly, it doesn’t have to be.
A lot of classic Thanksgiving foods are nearly vegan. In fact, the full guide has a whole page dedicated to easy store-bought options and shortcuts. Here are a few highlights:
• Many boxed stuffing mixes are already vegan, just use veggie broth and plant-based butter.
• Most store-bought pie crusts are accidentally vegan.
• Vegetable broth and vegan butter can transform most side dishes instantly.
• Coconut milk or oat creamer replaces heavy cream easily.
It’s less about learning a whole new way of cooking and more about swapping a few simple ingredients, and your meal still tastes like the holiday you love.
